About:
The web site Open Sesame, (http://www.open-sesame.com/fairyencounters.html to read encounters), houses testimonials that clearly express two distinctly different types of small winged fairy -- those with butterfly wings and those with the wings of a dragonfly. Both types are often described as having a golden glow about them. The fairy, or nature sprite, is the main focus of my new sculpture, Regeneration Fairy, and depicts the dragonfly winged variety. It is a life sized representation of a creature I once saw with my own eyes. (see below; Encounter)
Made from a variety of natural and man made objects, this assemblage sculpture speaks to us of the magic of regeneration; one thing becomes another, the old from the new, change through growth. Here, the fairy seems to hover over a desert waste land on a barren tree. But there's no sadness to the scene because she has just dropped the seeds of new life to the ground -- hope for the future. Throughout history people have looked to stories of fairies and the like to restore the human spirit through fancy, and that is the job given to the fair folk in this artwork. Reclaimed materials such as felled ash tree branch, morning glory flower seeds, and naturally shed snake skin, are present to express the concept of regeneration, as well as to add texture and form. The snake isn't actually in the scene, however. Only his skin lets us know he's come by, shed off the past, and moved on to something new already. The snake tells us that we can do the same.

I had gone camping in southern Indiana, (USA), with my sister and some of her pals when I encountered what I believe to be fairies. This was quite a few years back now. We'd pitched our tents in an old family tree farm that was no longer being harvested. Being allowed to grow freely for many years the pine trees had reached massive heights! We'd found a break in the densly packed forest -- a large field in shape of what seemed to be a perfect circle. While a full moon glowed overhead my sister began to sing. One of her pals soon joined in to create a lovely harmony with his deep voiced added to hers. The effect echoing over the field was nearly eerie. Feeling the urdge to acknowledge the full moon with more privacy, since I am a Pagan, I moved to the center of the circular field. I sat down, alone in the tall praire grass, and closed my eyes.
I listened to the music in the summer night with joy. Gradually my ear detected an odd sound added to the strains of a Janis Joplin tune the others were sharing. It was a sound like tinkling bells in a tin can and sounded off with each note of the song, as if it too were singing. I also noticed that I didn't feel alone in the field any longer. Wildlife crossed my mind so I opened my eyes without moving my body to avoid scaring whatever animal might be nearby. I was totally amazed to discover dozens of small glowing orbs in the grass all around me! Some were blue, some a light green, but most of the lights had a golden white glow. I caught my breathe and froze in place. One of the things moved very near to my face and I could see a figure in the center of the light. I couldn't believe my eyes!
The creatures were about four to seven inches in height. It was difficult to tell exactly because they seem to pull up their legs when they fly! They moved in time with the music seeming to be hypnotized by the song. I saw the head of what seemed to be a female turn quickly. There was a sharp popping sound and all of the lights scattered and zoomed away. I heard a man's shaking voice say, "What the @*!! was THAT!" One of the guys had ventered out to check on me and had startled the creatures away. But he too had seen them, so I had to throw out my thoughts of personal insanity! Now, I'm a fairly rational person, but I still have no other explaination of what I saw other than to say they were fairies -- the Fair Folk!
