PYROGRAPHY -- Playin' With Fire!

One of the methods we use to create our treasures at Mystic Griffin Art is pyrography. Both James and Tree are fire signs, so it's only natural that the artists' would be attracted to fire as an expressive tool. We regularly provide one of a kind ritual tools, unique decorative items, and fine arts that employ the technique of pyrography. View our gallery of past & present examples of our fun with fire, (gallery in progress).

View Gallery. Some items shown are available, some are already sold. No two are just the same, but we can, upon request, make another version of many items such as pentacles and wall hangings.

Pyrography, also known as woodburning, is the art of decorating wood, bone, or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object. Pyrography means "writing with fire" , and the process has been practiced by a number of cultures including the Egyptians and some African tribes since the dawn of recorded time. The burning can be done by means of a modern solid-point tool (similar to a soldering iron) or hot wire tool, or a more basic method using a metal implement heated in a fire, a match or lighter, or even sunlight concentrated with a magnifying lens. This allows a great range of natural tones and shades to be achieved - beautiful subtle effects can create a picture in sepia tones, or strong dark strokes can make a bold, dramatic design. This work is time-consuming, done entirely by hand, with each line of a design drawn individually. After the design is burned in, wooden objects are often coloured, sometimes boldly or more delicately tinted. (17)

Some Current Projects ...

Here's a sneek peek at a few of the pyrography projects in the studio. Progress has been slow going because we've many projects underway. If you're interested in an item you see, and it isn't finished yet, send an email to let us know. It will put a fire under our backsides, and we'll put priority on that project just for you!
