The Pentagram and Pentacle
The five-pointed star, pentagram, found on a pentacle, has been a symbol in human history for a very long time. An ancient feminine symbol representing Venus. According to the Greek mathematician & philosopher Pythagoras, five was the number of man, because of the fivefold division of the body, and the division of the soul. According to Pythagoras, the five points of the pentagram each represent one of the five elements that make up man: fire, water, air, earth & psyche or center, energy, fluid, breath, matter & mind. The most common uses of the pentagram today are by the religious witch, Wiccan, Neo-pagan & Satanic groups. Its used as a protection symbol & magic seal for objects & places. In most Wiccan & modern pagan traditions, the symbolic meaning is taken from Ceremonial Magick & nineteenth century occultism in general. In many of these traditions, it can symbolize the unity of mankind with the earth, the spirit world & also the human body. At its core the pentagram represents the four elements ruled by the spirit, although as modern theologies mature the meaning of the pentagram is growing in depth.
