"The Abhorsen Trilogy", by Garth Nix; A 3 book set of magic!
A series of three epic books from an award-winning author. Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen, are available in a beautiful box set featuring magickal cover art by Leo and Diane Dillon.
It can be a hard chore for Wiccans and magick users to weed out stories that reflect our beliefs of honor, integrity in use of magick, and the need for imaginative play. It can be harder still for parents raising a child in Wicca to find stories that will teach a young adult those concepts without being preachy. The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix was a great read! I first found a copy of Sabriel years ago in the public library. I enjoyed it so much that I recently purchased a new (2007) set of all three books in the series.
Tons of magic, necromancy, and throwing of spells! Pagans and Wiccans should find few contradictions to known beliefs; with imagination, and another world kept in mind, nearly all of the rules of magick apply. The ritual use of bells was pleasing, the human aspect well played, and some scenes do get fairly creepy. There's no sweet Samantha wiggling her nose to bewitch us here; these female role models kick some serous zombie butt! There are guys and young men among the heroic characters too, so boys will like it just as much as girls who aren't squeamish. Yet there is honor and integrity too, making this an excellent exciting read for most young witches of about 11 years old, all the way up to us adults.
I've just discovered another title by this same author. "Across the Wall: A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories" is the newest tome of the fantasy realm created by Garth Nix. I'm ordering a copy now, and shall later add my views on this book too. That brings the total to four book titles that could keep you enthralled in a world of mysterious magick.
